The team at Nolimit City are back again, taking us into battle this time in Legion X, a defensive release packed with some of their most popular flagship ‘x’ features – xWays and xNudge. We’re invited to join their feared legion of the Imperial Roman Army for this fight on land, sea and horseback – ‘home to some of the most skilled and well-trained killers of our time’. With a default 72 ways to win, increasing with xWays and Infectious xWays, 4 different bonus rounds and a flurry of base features, Legion X packs a punch with excitement, but also with potential – featuring wins up to 31,000x bet. Let’s take a closer look at this extremely (10) volatile release, finished off with a default RTP of 96.04%.

Legion X Base Game

As usual, the Nolimit team are throwing everything they’ve got into this release, never ones to shy away from a theme. The overall scenery is dark and misty with a deep blue hue, although this just paves the way for what’s happening in the forefront to stand out more than ever. With reels set upon dark walnut and bold symbols with the bravest warriors atop, the overall feeling is one of battle – almost one of triumph, particularly when the audios come booming through. This fight is far from over, though. To claim victory over Legion X you’ll have to give it your all, exploring the hosts of features along the way.

Legion X Base Features

Taking place across 5 reels, players begin their combative journey with 72 ways to win, although this is just a jumping off point. Wins are formed by matching at least 3 symbols in any position across adjacent reels, beginning with the leftmost reel. We begin with the low symbols – 10, J, Q, K and A, offering win values between 0.1 and 0.15x bet for 3 of a kind matches, increasing to values between 1 and 1.1x bet for 5 of a kind matches. At the premium end, we have 5 warriors, each a bit odder and a bit more frightening than the last. It’s hard to really describe what they are, so we’ll go by colour – land 3 blue or green warrior symbols to see wins of 0.2 and 0.25x bet respectively, whilst these values will increase to 1.2 and 1.3x bet for 5 of a kind matches. Orange and red warriors are next, awarding wins of 0.3 and 0.4x bet respectively for 3 of a kind matches, increasing to 1.5 and 1.75x bet for 5 of a kind. Finally, a golden warrior takes the top symbol position – awarding wins between 0.5 and 2.5x bet for 3-5 of a kind matches. Of course, this is just the start, with incrementing multipliers and increasing ways available.

Infectious Wilds Convert Low Symbols into Wild Symbols on the Middle 3 Reels

Aside from the 10 regular symbols on offer, we have a host of special symbols, each offering their own feature. First up it’s xNudge Wilds – a classic from Nolimit City. Available to land on any reel, when one of these stacked Wild symbols land in view, it will nudge up or down to be fully visible on the entire reel. As it nudges, the Wild multiplier attached will increment by +1 for every nudge. Several Wild multipliers in view add to each other for a total Wild multiplier.

Next it’s Infectious Wilds, similar to the Shoot-Out feature of Deadwood. Infectious Wild symbols can only land on the first and last reel – landing one on the first reel will transform all instances of one randomly selected low symbol into Wilds on the middle 3 reels. Land an Infectious Wild symbol on the first and the last reel, and all low symbols will convert to Wilds on the middle 3 reels.

xNudge Wilds Nudge to be Fully in View, Incrementing their Multiplier by +1 for Every Nudge

Moving on from the wilds, and we meet the feature available to increase ways to win – xWays symbols, available to land on the first and last reel. An xWays symbol will transform into any other random symbol, with the exception of Wilds or Bonus symbols. It will reveal 2-4 symbols of the same kind, thus increasing the number of ways to win. If an xWays symbol lands only on the first reel, this will only happen in this landing position, however if an xWays symbol lands on the first and the last reel, Infectious xWays will trigger.

If Infectious xWays are triggered, all instances on the middle 3 reels of the revealed xWays symbol will also expand to the same size. Each of these instances will increase to between 2-4 symbols, for a potential of even more ways to win.

If an xWays symbol and an Infectious Wild symbol land on the first and last reel, both enhanced features will be triggered. First, all instances of the revealed xWays symbol on the middle 3 reels will expand to the same size, and then all low symbols will convert to Wilds on the middle 3 reels – giving the potential for expanded symbols to turn Wild.

If an xNudge Wild lands on the same reel as an Infectious xWays affected symbol, the affected xWays symbol will expand first, thus creating the opportunity for a higher Wild multiplier as the Wild nudges up or down these additional spaces.

Legion X Bonus

Legion X features 4 different bonus rounds, each triggered differently and set in front of a fiery battle scene. First, it’s 8 Legion X Spins – triggered by landing 3 Bonus symbols in the middle 3 reels. At the beginning of Legion X Spins, the active game area will increase in size as reels 1 and 5 receive an additional symbol each – producing 162 ways to win.

No Strength Only Honour occurs when the maximum win of 31,000x bet has been reached. When the total win exceeds this amount, the game round will end and 31,000 times the base bet is awarded.

First Impression

Well, if you’re looking for a release bursting at the seams with features and potential – I’ve found the one for you. Nolimit City are once again showing us that a highly, even extremely, volatile slot doesn’t have to be devoid of base features, and nor does a release packed with features have to be limited in capability. What we’ve ended up with here is a release that has plenty to keep things exciting and ticking over, whilst having a deep potency within, capable of producing wins up to 31,000x bet – not the biggest Nolimit have done, but nothing to be sniffed at either.

Maybe the team have listened to feedback from UK players or those unwilling to fork out for the feature buys, or maybe its coincidence, but Legion X feels like a different kind of release – one where we’re always on the look out for something, knowing the base can go somewhere. Of course, each of their previous releases can and have produced magic in the base, but none had a list of possibilities quite as extensive as this.

The real excitement and drama is still reserved for those four bonus rounds – and what a selection they are. We’ll no doubt see some squabbles from players over which is the ‘best’, and we’ll each form our own opinions, which is to be expected, especially considering each of the bonuses play out differently from the rest – we’re not just upgrading the same bonus each time, we’re getting a different sticky feature. At times, Infectious Wilds, at times Infectious xWays, and at times both, which is where we really see things come to life. With each of the features on offer it’s clear to see just how they can go huge which is so crucially important with an extremely volatile release – players need to see how this game is worth their time, and with Legion X nothing could be clearer.

On a statistical side, there’s nothing to complain about. Default RTP sits at 96.04%, increasing as high as 96.71% depending on the feature buy chosen. There is a second setting available of 94.04%, so players are encouraged to check. Maximum win we have of course mentioned at 31,000x bet, with a probability of <1 in 36 million spins, although I suspect it won’t be long before we see this top end, like with any new Nolimit release. Hit frequency is 1 in 4, volatility is extreme (10), and a nice selection of stakes between 0.20 and 100 are available. Overall, a superb release from the team.
