Microgaming partner Just For The Win are back again, bringing us a bearish release enhanced with incrementing multipliers and the potential for a flurry of free spins. Featuring wins on offer up to 25,000x bet, alongside an RTP of 96.20%, Kodiak Kingdom is a very highly volatile beast, capable of producing incredible wins, but to be approached with caution – much like its namesake brown bear. Let’s take a closer look at what this release can do…
Visually, we’re on the mighty Kodiak Island, home to not just the Kodiak bear, but also some picturesque scenery. With the reels set atop a beautiful lake beside foliage and flower with snow capped mountains in the background, this is one slot landscape you could frame and hang in your home. Audios are subtle and undistracting, with growls each time a bear lands on the screen.
Kodiak Kingdom Base Features
Set across 6×4 reels, wins are formed on Kodiak Kingdom by matching at least 3 symbols in any position on adjacent reels, beginning with the leftmost reel, for a total of 4,096 ways to win. Symbols begin with non-premiums of 10, J, Q, K and As, paying between 0.2 and 1.6x bet for wins between 3 and 5 of a kind. At the premium end, fish and eagles reward players with wins of 0.4x bet for 3 of a kind, increasing to values of 2.5x bet for 6 of a kind. Next up is panthers, awarding wins between 0.6 and 3x bet for matches between 3 and 5 of a kind, followed by moose, paying out 1x bet for 3 of a kind matches, increasing to 4x bet for 6 of a kind. Finally, Kodiak bears pay for 2 of a kind, at a rate of 1x bet, up to an impressive 7x bet for 6 of a kind wins, and can be stacked symbols.
There’s not a great deal happening in the base game in quantity, but what is there does help to amp up the excitement. There are 2 Wild symbols available, both of which can appear on reels 2-5 only. First up is the regular Wild symbol, substituting for all symbols except the Free Spins symbol, or the Multiplier Wild, which is the second Wild available.
When a Multiplier Wild lands in any position on the reels, the multiplier, which always begins at x1, increases by +1. This is a win multiplier, which will then be applied to any and all wins during the current spin. The win multiplier will always reset to x1 on a new spin.
Kodiak Kingdom Bonus
Land 3, 4, 5 or 6 Free Spin symbols to trigger 10, 15, 20 or 30 free spins, respectively. During free spins, things continue much like the base game, with 4,096 ways to win and a win multiplier active.
Each time a Free Spin symbol lands anywhere on the reels, +1 free spins will be awarded, whilst landing 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 Free Spin symbols in view awards an additional 3, 10, 15, 20 or 30 free spins, respectively. Each time a Multiplier Wild lands in view, the win multiplier will increase by +1, but this value will stick for the duration of free spins, with every individual win within free spins being multiplied by this value.
Players in appropriate regions can opt in to buy the feature for a cost of 90x bet. Once the feature has been purchased, at least 3 symbols will land (on reels 1, 2 and 3) for 10 free spins, however there is a chance to also land Free Spin symbols on reels 4, 5 or 6, for additional spins up to 30.
First Impression
Well, first off kudos to the person behind the landscape design – they’ve painted a really beautiful picture of an Alaskan style island, particularly when things move into free spins and the sun is setting. Symbols on the reels are also representative of this talent, with each symbol easily distinguishable, and colours chosen to contrast, making this one of the nicest looking releases we’ve seen from any Microgaming partner so far.
When it comes to the game play, it’s a bold choice to really only offer one feature in this current climate of releases tending to be over-packed with options. The Multiplier Wild does certainly keep things interesting, but without cascades it can be frustrating to see the wilds land and know there’s nothing you can do to make them matter if they’re in the wrong position. On the free spins side, though, the Multiplier Wilds really shine, alongside additional free spins on offer for every Free Spin symbol in view. When we consider the potential for impressive win multipliers alongside the stacked Kodiak symbol, it’s easy to see how this release can produce wins up to 25,000x bet in size.
On a statistical front, RTP is more than fair at 96.20%, and volatility levels are considered ‘very high’, so it’s worth noting that these incredible wins won’t be occurring every 50 spins. When this release does get going though, bear down – it could be a wild ride.
